Frequently asked questions about O-level examinations
What is the O-level exam?
The Singapore O-level examination, also known as GCE 'O' Level (Singapore-Cambridge General Certificate of Education Ordinary Level Examinations), is jointly organized by the Ministry of Education of Singapore and the Cambridge Examinations Board of the United Kingdom. It is also a unified examination for secondary school students in Singapore after completing 4-5 years of secondary education, so students can also compare it to our Chinese high school entrance examination. The examination is held once a year and the examination results are recognized by all Commonwealth countries.
What is the use of O-level examinations?
After obtaining their results, candidates can apply for Singapore Junior College (JC), Polytechnic (Poly), Institute of Technical Education (ITE) based on their results, or go to junior colleges or university preparatory courses in other Commonwealth countries overseas.
15% of secondary school students enter junior colleges or high schools after passing the O-level examination. After two to three years of study, they can take the A-level examination and enter Singapore’s public universities.
Most secondary school students take the O-level exam to enter the five government polytechnics after graduation. After completing the three-year course, they can work in Singapore. Students who get excellent results in the polytechnics have the opportunity to continue studying in government universities. Since 2006, polytechnics have given 5% of their places to students with special talents every year.
15% of secondary school students also go to the Institute of Technical Education with their O-level results. After graduation, they can go to work or continue their studies at a polytechnic.
How are O-level examination scores calculated?
The total score of O-level is the sum of the grades of each subject, so the smaller the total score, the better.
The O-level examination adopts a 9-point scoring system, which is divided into A1, A2, B3, B4, C5, C6, D7, D8, E9.
The lower the score, the better! A1 is the best score. Among them, English score is a threshold for many Chinese students. The English test must be at least D7 and the total score must be 18 points or less to have the opportunity to be admitted to any polytechnic. Students who have an English test score of C6 or less and a total score of 15 or less have the opportunity to be admitted to the 14 government junior colleges (university preparatory courses).
So no matter how good your other grades are, you must pass the English test first. Of course, if your English is not strong enough, you can also take language courses now.
